"Do the needful"

One fine morning around 8:20 am when I reached office reception, I saw a guy waiting near the glass door. He looked at me and said with a smile “Do the needful”. For a second, I couldn’t get him but then he was pointing his fingers towards my ID card to flash at entrance so that he can go through main glass door. I flashed ID card and we took staircase to go to our respective work floor. As soon as I reached first floor, I heard voice of same guy “if you won’t mind, “Do the needful” at second floor entrance gate too”. I won’t mind flashing ID card at second floor but instead made me to think more about these words “Do the needful”. My first conclusion was “Corporate way of asking favour”.

As usual (routine work in very first half an hour in office), I went to switch-on the lights C & D (which are above my cubicle); switch on computer and wait to complete its boot; and then browse through mailbox, note down the to-do list for the day, prepare the channel management scorecard for morning meeting with boss at 9 am.

At 9 am, my boss and channel management team (myself, Chirag, Praveen) met to review progress and discuss & plan for new initiative. Boss was explaining action points to be done by Praveen but seeing him blank, he said not to worry; Abhishek will “Do the needful” where ever you are struck. These 3 words again strike me “Do the needful”. I was trying to interpret the meaning of these words again; and came to second conclusion “Corporate way to ask help in work”.

We finished our discussion around 10 am and were on our way to respective cubicle; Chirag came to me and said “Abhishek, as you know I am new in this team and I am not able to get what our boss has said me to do, I mean what to start? How to start? Whom to contact? Etc. etc. so please “Do the needful”. Now what does it mean now? Was he asking me favour or asking me to help him? I got his message seeing his eyes filled with hope. So with this, I drew my third conclusion “Please complete the work (assignment or task) for me”. He thanked me and left towards his cubicle.

I was going through action points and prioritizing it according to its importance & due date for completion. As a channel management – executive, I got into work like follow-up with branches, status, rollout, appointment, etc. It was around 12:30 pm; I saw mail from my colleague Ashok (Logistic – Executive) requesting me to send him list of partners. I got irritated with this because day before yesterday, I have already sent him partner list. I called him up at his extension and said him calmly that required partner list already been forwarded to him day before yesterday. He replied “Abhishek, in two days there can be anything in list; I mean new appointment or de-listing partner”. I said “Ashok, there is no updation in list. The list which I have sent you is the updated one.” He replied “Abhishek, ‘Do the needful’ by resending it by mail”. Again ‘Do the needful’; I was trying to get his words “Do the needful by resending it by mail”. The list which I have sent earlier though it was updated, I have to resend it. In corporate, mail is strong communication as well as weapon and can put you in trouble if actions are not taken at appropriate time. I got the point and wrote fourth conclusion “Revert and provide what is required from you through mail; else you will be in trouble”

One of my friends, Mohit (business development – executive) called me for coffee around 3 pm evening. I went cafeteria and met him there. We were sipping our coffee and Mohit was grieving for something. After few minutes, he explained me that he got a mail with three simple words “Do the needful”; back of mind I was thinking my friend is too victim of these words. He said that he got a mail from one of his colleague with these simple three words “Do the needful” which meant him to complete the task for which he is not responsible nor he is suppose to do but just because his colleague had marked his boss mail id and he got mail from boss to complete this task (close this issue); he have to do this. My friend enlightened me with fifth conclusion “Somebody can get rid of their own responsibility by burdening your shoulders”

We were back to work after short coffee break. Preparing reports, presentation, follow-up, etc was keeping me busy and hour’s hand was moving like minutes. It was around 5:15 pm, I got a mail with some absurd subject and body of mail was only “Do the needful”. I looked up and trying to find face of god to say him “Do the needful”. Back to mail screen, I couldn’t understand what exactly am I suppose to do; then decided to read chain of mails and figure it out what action to be taken to close this issue. After reading series of mails, I got to know that there needs a change in partner address for which mail was being circulated around the globe and finally landed to my system PC mailbox. Interestingly, I called the guy who had sent me this mail and asked him “what am I suppose to do”. He replied “Abhishek, I just saw partner name and you being in channel management; I thought to forward it to you”. I kept the phone and was thinking “how lazy the person was! Without knowing what to be done or say who will be responsible person to close this issue; he had just sent mail saying “Do the needful”. I also agree with him, being it something about partner name and me as channel management - executive; he had sent mail to me but atleast would have read the mail and send me mail regarding issue. He had just blindly sent me the mail. This mail has sent one more signal to my brain stating sixth conclusion “If you are feeling lazy and don’t want to get into depth of issue, just forward mail to one of colleague who is in that specific department; and don’t worry as it will reach to the person who will close the issue”

With lots of “Do the needful” and many interpretation of it; I left for the day from office.

One may have different views or say different people may have same views for the same three words “Do the needful”. I am just sharing my views.

With this, I would also say you “Do the needful” and you would have got it right by leaving me comment on this blog.

ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY

I was not able to find interesting topic after my wonderful adventurous trip to TADA Waterfall. No topic was making me interest untill I went to my proverbs section (I am fond of reading proverbs; captivating, catchy phrases with sensible meaning) to refresh my mind. I browsed through hundreds of proverb, short listing proverbs which interests me most, and then finally came down to this inspiring proverb “ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY”.

ROME is the capital of Italy; popularly known as “capital of world” ‘Eternal city” ‘City of seven hills”. In the founding myth of Rome, Romulus marked the outline of the city by a channel. Drawing this outline could have been done in a single day. Building the city, and expanding it to the metropolis it took a lot longer. Even though the idea of Rome was defended from day one, the reality of Rome took time to get into place; this city did not come into existence all of a sudden. It was founded in 753 B.C. Then Emperor Augustus and his successors added to its glory and grandeur till, at last, after several centuries, it became the world's most magnificent city. Thus origin of proverb “ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY”.

I am excited to write more about this phrase / proverb “ ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY” because it inspires us to constantly pursue our goals; work more harder; climb every small step of success ladder to reach much higher than sky to see yourself at “top of the world”. It is about patience, determination, commitment and passion to work hard without expecting results and success to come immediately and this will surely give you success which will be known to whole world.

History says itself and gives us lots of examples whether it is magnificent architecture, monument or people himself. It took thousands of skillful laborers and decades to build Taj Mahal; fame as No 1 rank in Seven Wonders of World. 8 year old boy started working at petrol pump worked hard for decades to become entrepreneur of No 1 petroleum refinery industries known as Reliance Industries. Yes, you guessed it right; I am talking about Dhirubhai Ambani who has created his vast empire of Reliance Industries in the field of petroleum, cloth, etc. This all did not happen in a single day or fortnight. It took decades of hardship to achieve their ambition, their dream they have seen.

We often think that we have work hard and we should get immediate results and deserve for success. We are wrong. Great things in life cannot achieve instantly nor does success come to your door knocking every evening. Keep in mind “Instant success achieved is of no value and fades away easily as the sun sets every evening.”

I see three aspects of this phrase / proverb “ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY”. First is the vision and dream to build; second is the plan and way to build and third is execution and working for decades to built ROME in such a magnificent way.

1) DREAM AND VISION: I do believe “Those who do not dream; cannot do anything new in life”. You cannot do or strive anything great unless you dream of it. You should dream and have vision to do something great (though it seems odd to world; you have pursue your dream).

2) PLAN TOWARDS GOAL: I would say “Every step kept forward is according to plan” military context. In military, every action taken towards goal is well-planned and always kept in mind. One wrong step taken can cost failure of whole system. It implies that we should make a proper plan before executing or jumping towards goal. We should plan accordingly to achieve our goal and which helps us to reach our goal.

3) EXECUTION AND WORK HARD:Wherever you go, go with your heart”. Your plan and vision would seem odd to world but if you have faith and belief in your dream; work hard towards your goad with all determination and dedication. It may take decade to achieve your goal but keep in mind “Journey of thousand miles starts with single step”. Only Plan and no work will make give you fantasy of life being lived in a beautiful castle built up on ninth cloud.

ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY” I would also say “NEITHER YOU CAME TO EXISTENCE IN SINGLE DAY”. By this I mean, one has keep patience, determination, dedication and work hard towards its goal. Success will knock your door surely. GIVE YOUR BEST FOR YOUR OWN FUTURE WHICH YOU HAVE START BUILDING FROM DAY 0.

TADA Waterfall

It was 5 AM on 18th August. Eyes were trying to wake up and get ready for the adventure waiting for the day. Struggling hard, got up and making sure that our F.R.I.E.N.D.S gang are also awake; called and informed to be ready by 6 AM. Qualis arrived at sharp 5:30 AM. I took extra clothes, camera and indispensable mobile phone.

6 AM First call to Debdeep, to be at Vadapalani Main Road; on the way I confirmed that Car has CD player. Deb came with huge bag of his size with lots of essential things inside. It would be good enough to say most important and essential bag (Bag full of biscuits, chip, and jam for our lunch at TADA Waterfall). Second call to Mohan, main culprit to delay the trip by half an hour. Deepak called me and was expecting us to have reached his house as decided. Culprit Mohan came in sight and was walking along with his friend Prashant. We left towards Deepak home around 6:30 AM. Third call to Deepak informing him that we are on the way to his house and not to worry much. Deepak and Divyanshu joined to complete our F.R.I.E.N.D.S gang. We planned to depart towards TADA at 6 AM, but thanks to our Mohan Smiling Face of gang; we departed at 7 AM.

Front seat near driver was occupied by me, middle row by Debdeep, Mohan and Prashant and Last Bencher were Deepak and Divyanshu. Thanks to traffic, we were able to cross the city limit within 45 minutes. We were having fun in car, music, gossip, company stories and love stories (developing, under-construction, work-in-progress, on-job, etc.). Bulls eyes Target were Mohan and me. We all were enjoying all of these. We had stop at town 25 Kms away from TADA, to have some breakfast (Dosa, Idli, Poori, and Tea). Debdeep and Prashant were refreshing themselves with their cigarettes.

We were on the way to TADA and were enjoying scenic views from both sides. Mountain, green fields, smooth road, etc. Climate too was supporting us and adding flavor to our joy and complements to the view, we were enjoying from car. Cool breeze, music, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and smooth drive towards destination. What else one needs to enjoy trip like this!!!! It is just the beginning towards TADA. You can enjoy this atleast 8-10 Kms while driving towards TADA waterfalls.

Real ride begins when Qualis too has to struggle to drive further around 2-3 kms on rocky path. Trust me, you will enjoy this too. Finally we reached a point, where car cannot go further and you have start walking towards TADA waterfalls. There was cool stream flowing at starting point and it was nice scenic view. We all got ready with our bags.

Lights, Camera and Actions. Sounds like Film Locations; yeah true but not for film, it is for adventure trip to begin. Natural Light, Soothing Climate, Camera was ready with me and Action to start trekking. Trekking Action started by Debdeep. You have to see him to believe the way he was looking as if he had already jogged around 4-5 kms.

Way towards TADA waterfall is really adventurous; very thin lane guiding you the way. It is rocky thin lane, bushes, trees and huge rock either side. Some portion of path is like walking on the desert sand. You have to walk for around 2-3 kms to reach first rest point. Cool Streams flowing and enough space to have camp fire and take rest for while. Huge Rocks either side, forest environment, rattling sound of snakes. You will enjoy if anyone makes Tarzan or Adivasi culture voice in such atmosphere. Going through these environments, one may think whether they are on right track or lost in jungle. Songs like “Kadam Tu Badhai Ja” “Hain Yehi Raastha Hai Tera” “Do Pyar Karne Wale Jungle Main Kho Jaye” “Dheere Dheere Chalna” “Babuji Jera Dheere Chalo” “Phatli hai Kamar” would come to your mind and will refresh your minds while singing.

We were surprised to see one family selling water pouches, snacks, etc… They were around 5-6 kms away from the car (initial point from where we started walking towards TADA waterfalls) or say around 15-20 kms from nearby town. There is small temple of Shivji. This was our second rest point and having some channa packets, we again begin our trekking.

There was one point where we felt that this is final but I and deepak were much curious to know what is further and how to go further. We crack down the way to go further and lead our gang to come. It was climbing on huge rocks and reaching the other side of it. It was really good experience. Then came one small waterfall, we thought this would be final, but again we were curious to go further. I and Debdeep climb huge rocks whether to know is there anything or this is final destination. I and Debdeep climbed that rocks with great difficulty and infact we also have to shrunk ourselves and go in between of two huge rocks to reach other side. What we feel was like reaching heaven! What a view! Cool Stream with duo colour (blue initially and deep or say further ahead its colour was dark green). Water is as clear as Bisleri water. So Pure and clean!

This was final destination. We shouted out of excitement “At last we reach final destination of TADA Waterfalls” After walking for around 5-6 kms in around 3 hours, reaching here was heaven. One has to see it, feel it, enjoy it and believe it. We enjoyed cool water and refreshing ourselves inside the stream. It was deep further down. It would be more than 8 ft deep. After half an hour, we came out, get ready to start towards our car.

It was easy to climb rock and trek further on but while returning back, it would be difficult and one has to recollect the path. Deepak was excited to sit under the stream shower (waterfall). Initially we were reluctant because just now we have changed our clothes and again to go. It was tempting and we went to enjoy the shower. Word like “Wow” “Wonderful” “Mazaa Aa gaya” would come out of your mouth as soon as you are under the stream shower. Thanks to Deepak who persuaded us to enjoy this shower else we would not have experience such wonderful.

We came down and unpacked our most important bag (Debdeep Bag) to have snacks. Fun and interesting part of snacks was biscuit, Lays Chip and Jam. There was no bread. We enjoyed unique combination of Biscuit – Jam & Lays Chip – Jam. It do taste good, No one can eat just one. After snacks, we packed our bags, got ready and back to trekking down the rocks to reach our starting point where our car was parked. Mohan seems to be much tried; every now and then he loses balances on rock. Thank god, he did not hurt himself much.

We trekked down to the car and had great adventurous day. Hungry, tired yet enthusiastic. We went to same hotel (we went for breakfast) and had our lunch around 5 PM and non-stop to Chennai. We reached Chennai around 6 PM; dropped our gang F.R.I.E.N.D.S. members to their home.

Adventurous Day! Wonderful Day! Wow Day!
