Set in 1960s; Movie tells you the story behind Bombay leading its way to be a major City of India, Business Capital of India; Manhattan of India. How a small group of big shot gangster, politician, industrialist, investor play around for their own benefit to make Bombay, One Big City.
Production director has beautifully re-created Mumbai to Bombay making you feel that you are in 1960s; be it vintage car, bar, high society club, newspaper publishing house, building, rail tramps, police, attire - fashion style, you mention it anything. Everything seems so perfect for the Era 1960.
Ranbir Kapoor (Johnny Balraj) plays a small crook by robbing people on street, bus, tramps; along-with his childhood friend. Both shares close relationship since they meet each other in childhood days. One Classic Hollywood movie scene where a gangster dies in arm of his lady love; when asked who was he? lady love replies "He was a Big Shot"; this scene changes the mindset of Ranbir and now Ranbir wants to live and die being a Big Shot.
Journey begins when Ranbir (Johnny) tries to rob Karan Johar (Khambatta) but fails; still Karan sees some potential in Ranbir and makes him man of crime with price paid for it. Slowly, gradually Ranbir gains confidence of Karan and becomes favorite. He makes Ranbir a manager of famous Bombay Velvet Club.
Rosie (Anushka Sharma) plays a singer in club; perfect with fashion style statement and is lady-love of Johnny. But Rosie is sent to club with a mission of Khambatta's rival; Jimmy (newspaper publishing company head). Story revolves between Johnny journey to be big shot, Rosie to play lady love as well as confused between love and purpose of being with johnny, Jimmy intention to disclose Khambatta ambition of grabbing land and leaving thousand of mill workers go jobless, few minister, industrialist and investor helping Karan to make Bombay Big City.
Ranbir (Johnny Balraj) shows Shammi Kapoor hairdo and looks great; but I am not convinced with his gangster role as his boyish and chocolaty image does not leave him. Anushka (Rosie) too is perfect in fashion sense, looks flamboyant for 60s era; nothing much to watch her as she is seen more of singing on stage. Karan Johar (Khambatta) debuts in acting and would suggest him not to take work in which he is not capable at all. Jimmy (newspaper head) and Kay Kay (playing as investigation officer) does good act.
Personal Verdict:- Songs are irritating to watch and listen on-off screen. Except production set, fashion statement, attire, nothing worth in here. More shining and glitters is been shown; the less it is in movie. You can predict what to going to happen and still you got to wait long for same to happen. Stretched in boring manner. This Bombay has nothing smooth and good feel as Velvet has. Its rightly said "ALL THAT GLITTERS, IS NOT GOLD". **/5 from me.
